PROJECT TYPE: Interior Design, Industrial
CONTRACTOR: E&M Contractors
For this backyard renovation project in Toronto’s vibrant Beaches neighborhood, the goal was to transform a confined outdoor layout into an expansive entertainment hub. We began by removing a small, outdated deck to make way for a very large, open-concept space specifically designed for hosting large social gatherings, family events, and outdoor dining.
To deliver a classic look that complements the coastal aesthetic of the neighborhood, we constructed the entire project using premium cedar wood. Cedar is a naturally resilient wood species favored across Ontario for its rich grain, pleasant aroma, and natural resistance to rot and moisture decay. To ensure a sleek, premium finish, our carpentry team utilized an advanced hidden fastener system. This specialized installation method completely eliminates visible screws on the surface, leaving a perfectly smooth, barefoot-friendly floor that highlights the natural beauty of the timber.
Expanded Footprint: Designed with a wide layout to easily accommodate outdoor furniture, grilling stations, and large groups of guests.
Premium Cedar Materials: Built with high-grade cedar selected for its durability and excellent performance in fluctuating Ontario seasonal weather.
Invisible Fastener System: Handled with hidden hardware clips to protect the wood from surface entry holes, reducing splitting risks and extending the deck’s lifespan.
Why choose cedar wood for a custom deck in Toronto?
Cedar is a highly stable wood that naturally resists warping, shrinking, and insect damage. It handles the local climate exceptionally well and offers a classic, premium appearance that enhances the overall market value of homes in areas like The Beaches.
What are the benefits of a hidden fastener deck system?
Hidden fasteners clamp the deck boards tightly from the sides rather than face-screwing them from the top. This keeps the surface completely smooth, prevents water from pooling in screw holes, and entirely eliminates the risk of loose or popped screws underfoot.
How do you transition a small deck into a larger entertainment space?
Our team handles the entire process starting with the structural removal of the old footprint. We then re-engineer a heavy-duty ledger and joist frame foundation to safely support the expanded square footage, ensuring structural compliance and proper backyard drainage.
